01. Logitech MX Master 2S

DPI: 4,000 | Interface: Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless | Buttons: 7 | Ergonomic: Right-handed | Features: Scrolling wheel, Customizable buttons, Thumb wheel, ergonomic build

Customizable buttons
Not ambidextrous

Logitech produces some of the most responsive computer mice on the market, which is pretty handy when you need a tool with precision. Its cordless Logitech MX Master 2S Wireless Bluetooth Mouse improves on almost every aspect of the original MX Master, offering unrivalled comfort thanks to its ergonomic design. You can comfortably use it for hours on end, and it features a super-responsive scroll wheel that lets you browse web pages or documents at your own speed, depending on how fast you flick the wheel.

Buttons located on the side of the mouse also let you flit between windows, and you can configure the buttons to help speed up your workflow. It's wireless as well, which gives you more freedom when working on your desk. The only downside is that it is expensive.

02. Logitech MX Vertical

DPI: 4,000 | Interface: Bluetooth (up to three devices); USB-C | Buttons: 6 | Ergonomic: Right-handed | Features: Ergonomic build, Easy-Switch and Flow-Enabled, Fast recharging, Cursor speed switch

Ergonomic design
4-month battery life
Slightly odd design

The Logitech MX Vertical is an extremely comfortable mouse to use. The handshake grip is designed to reduce the stress on your wrist and hand muscles. You can connect to up to three devices at a time, and a handy button on top of the mouse enables you to switch between different computers instantly. It also promises fast recharging and smooth performance. On the downside, there's no slot of a wireless receiver, and the quirky and slightly bulky design won't be for everyone.

03. Logitech M185 wireless mouse

DPI: 1000 | Interface: 2.4 GHz wireless connectivity; USB receiver | Buttons: 3 | Ergonomic: Ambidextrous | Features: Scroll wheel

Great value
Plug-and-play

If you're after a reliable, cheap, no-frills option, try the Logitech M185. This wireless mouse comes with an unobtrusive nano USB receiver, and offers 2.4GHZ connectivity that promises virtually no delay or dropouts. It works with Windows, Mac, Chrome OS and Linux, and is super-simple to get started with: just plug in the receiver and start using the mouse.

Of course, for this price, you're not getting anything fancy. While the symmetrical design can be used in either hand (good news for lefties), if you're going to be using it for long hours you might want to consider something with a more ergonomic design.

04. Apple Magic Mouse 2

The best mouse for Apple devices

DPI: 1300 | Interface: Bluetooth | Buttons: 0 | Ergonomic: Ambidextrous | Features: Multi-touch

Best Buy Bluetooth Mouse

Looks fantastic
Expensive

Apple was late to join the innovative mouse party then it created the Magic Mouse. Its replacement, the imaginatively titled Magic Mouse 2, has a super-light design and laser-tracking capabilities that make it easy to flick between InDesign CC pages and make even the smallest changes on practically any surface.

However, the downside is that it’s perhaps a little over-sensitive at times. The multi-touch area on the top of the mouse, which lets you scroll in any direction, can sometimes become frustrating when you want to keep your finger in the same place for a long period of time. But for Magic Mouse evangelists, there is nothing that comes close to this mouse.

Alternatively, a lot of designers prefer the Apple Magic Trackpad 2, which brings Force Touch pressure-sensitive technology (as seen in the screen of the Apple Watch) and the trackpad of the 2015 12-inch MacBook. Or for a cheaper option, try the older Apple Magic Trackpad.

05. Anker Vertical Ergonomic Optical Mouse

The best ergonomic mouse for creatives

DPI: 1000 | Interface: USB | Buttons: 5 | Ergonomic: Vertical | Features: No

Good for RSI sufferers
Thumb buttons don't work on Macs

Sure, the Anker Vertical Ergonomic Optical Mouse looks weird. It’s vertically aligned to encourage healthy, neutral 'handshake' wrist and arm. But once you get used to it, it’s a cheap and very comfortable way to avoid RSI. If you're a digital creative that spends a lot of time using a mouse for work, then having one that is comfortable to use is essential. After all, if you injure yourself and cannot work, it could mean you lose money. That makes this odd-looking mouse a very wise investment, which is why we think it's the best ergonomic mouse for digital creatives.

06. Logitech MX Anywhere 2

Versatile and feature-packed mouse

DPI: 1,600 | Interface: Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless (pairs with up to three devices) | Buttons: 6 | Ergonomic: Right-handed | Features: Scrolling wheel, Logitech Darkfield Laser Tracking, unifying receiver, easy-switch tech, gesture function

Pairs with three devices
Has a free-scrolling wheel
Can't use it wired

Smaller than Logitech’s flagship, the MX Master, the Logitech MX Anywhere 2 is the ideal travel mouse for digital creatives that work on the road. It can connect to three different devices via Bluetooth, and it can last all day with just four minutes of charging!

Despite its small size, it still comes with the high-build quality we've come to expect from Logitech. It's not as ergonomic as other mice in this guide, but if you're looking for a mouse to carry around with you, this is the one to go for.

07. Logitech MX Ergo Wireless

DPI: 512 – 2048 | Interface: Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless | Buttons: 8 | Ergonomic: Right-handed | Features: Trackball, USB dongle, Logitech ‘Flow’ software compatibility for use with up to three PCs simultaneously, micro USB charging, precision mode

Comfortable design
No left-handed version

The MX Ergo Wireless is a distinctly retro-looking mouse thanks to its trackball. While many mice-makers have ditched trackballs in favour of optical laser mice, Logitech has continued to release trackball mice, and for that we're thankful. For many people, the tactile trackball makes working on creative projects much more intuitive and comfortable, and the MX Ergo Wireless can be used flat or at a 20-degree angle.

08. Microsoft Classic IntelliMouse

The legend returns

DPI: 3200 | Interface: Wired | Buttons: 5 | Ergonomic: Right-handed | Features: classic design, programmable buttons, subdued white lighting

Solid design
Not wireless

For people of a certain age, the Microsoft Intellimouse will bring back strong memories of a real workhorse of a mouse, that wasn't flashy, but did the job brilliantly. Microsoft has tapped into that nostalgia with the Microsoft Classic Intellimouse, which modernises the classic design and improves the sensor, allowing users to ramp up the DPI to 3,200. It’s not wireless, but for a comfortable and dependable mouse, this is a brilliant update to a computing icon.

09. Razer DeathAdder Chroma

DPI: 10,000 | Interface: USB | Buttons: 5 | Ergonomic: Right-handed | Features: lighting effects

Very comfortable
Lighting feels a bit gimmicky

Just like designers, gamers need a mouse that is sensitive and accurate, so it stands to reason that gaming mice are a good option for designers too. And the Razer range of gaming mice is one of the most responsive out there.

Razer mice have three types of sensors – dual, laser and optical – and an ergonomic shape designed to support the flow of your hand. The Razer Deathadder mouse is the bestseller (as well as the cheapest), and features an optical sensor and rubber side grips. It also syncs with all of your mouse settings stored in the Cloud.

10. Microsoft Bluetooth Mobile Mouse 3600

The best budget mouse

DPI: 1000 | Interface: Bluetooth | Buttons: 2 | Ergonomic: Ambidextrous | Features: No

Really, really cheap
Smaller than most mice

Microsoft's Bluetooth Mobile Mouse 3600 is, in our view, the best budget mouse money can buy these days. Although it has a rock-bottom price, it has impressive build quality and is very reliable. This is because Microsoft isn't just a software company – it also makes some very good peripherals, such as this mouse. It's small enough to easily carry around with you as well, which is handy if you do a lot of work on the road.

Best Mac Laptop For Music Production

Mac Pro; iMac; Mac Mini; Now here’s how they compare: First, there’s the Mac Pro. For studio recording, there’s probably nothing better. Peek your head into any pro studioand odds are, that’s what you’ll find. However The truth is: for most of us, a Mac.

  1. Looking to get a laptop for doing my music on now. I mainly use just cubase, a few vsts etc at the moment. Budget of up to 400 gbp. Needs good ram.
  2. Best Music Production Laptops Apple MacBook Pro. There’s a 13″ and a 15″ model (well, 13.3″ and 15.4″ to be exact) of the MacBook Pro laptop.

Updated with new models released January, 2019.

So you want to get serious about music production or podcasting? You’ll need a good laptop that can handle everything you throw at it.

There is a good chance you’ll have lots of programs and tabs open at the same time and you will need the ability to add at least 1 extra screen (many people use 2 or 3). These usage requirements use a lot of RAM and graphic power, respectively. I recommend getting at least 16GB RAM if at all possible.

Most important for audio processing is a CPU with fast single core performance. This will allow you to get your mixes into a single file much quicker and process effects and chains without the CPU needing to wait, among many other benefits. 8th generation Intel i7 processors are the best, followed by Intel i5. 7th generation processors are also excellent.

We’re just going to focus on the best laptops for music production and podcasting. There are many more options for desktop and all-in-one computers that work well for audio recording and podcast recording, but the flexibility and portability of a laptop makes it a must-have.

The other big thing to consider is Apple vs Windows (Mac vs PC). This choice usually comes down to what recording software (DAW) you are going to use and what you are used to using. Personally, I’m an Apple fan, but I started with Windows – and I use both of them daily. The Mac operating system is usually more stable, which can be critical when recording, although there are tons of big-name producers who swear by both systems.

If you want to use Logic Pro, it’s made by Apple and only works their computers. If you want to use GarageBand (a great choice for podcast production), it’s included free with Apple computers. Avid Pro Tools is another very popular industry-leading software that works on both systems.

Many of these popular tools have minimum requirements and recommended requirements. Performance will be much better if you get a laptop with at least the recommended requirements so I’m just going to recommend music production laptops that meet or exceed the recommended specs.

You usually will have a much longer lifespan if you get a computer toward the higher end of the spec list because it won’t be outdated as quickly, which means over time it will actually cost you less. Just something to consider.

Let’s start my favorite laptop from Apple:

There’s a 13″ and a 15″ model (well, 13.3″ and 15.4″ to be exact) of the MacBook Pro laptop.

If you’re working on a plane a lot the 13-inch option is perfect, but that’s not most people. I would recommend getting the latest 15″ MacBook Pro with Touchbar.

With up to 32GB of RAM, a 2.6GHz 6-core Intel i7 processor (Coffee Lake) and a 256GB (or 512GB) solid-state hard drive you’ll be set for years. As of early-2019, this is the best MacBook Pro for music production. I would stick with the 256GB SSD and expand with an external SSD later as needed unless you know you’ll need the extra space. It also comes with a Radeon Pro 560x with 4GB video RAM.

It comes with 4 USB-C ports so you will need to get adapters or a dock. USB Type-C is a different port from traditional USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports.

Stay away from regular Macbooks (the non “Pro” models). They basically use a similar processor to a phone, meaning they’re designed for battery life over speed.

Razer Blade

Yes, the Razer Blade is a “gaming” laptop, but that also means it’s equally well-equipped to effortlessly handle music production.

The model I recommend is the advanced 15″ Razer Blade. It has an Intel i7-8750H 6-Core CPU, NVIDIA RTX 2060 (6GB GDDR5 VRAM), 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD.

They also have an ultrathin 13″ laptop and a 17″ desktop replacement, but as of March 2019, the 15″ model is the most recently updated.

The build quality of these laptops is second-to-none and is typically compared with Apple for good reason. They don’t add a bunch of extra software that just ends up slowing your computer down and they care about speed and performance – my kind of company!

Microsoft Surface Pro 6

Microsoft has come a long way their Surface Pro line. They offer a few great configurations that would work well for a music production laptop.

I recommend the Surface Pro with an Intel i7, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD.

If you want to stay under $1,000, the Intel Core i5 with 8GB RAM is a lower-budget option. It comes with a MicroSD slot too. You can get one direct from Microsoft here.

The screen size on these is 12.3″ which can a little small, but most people get an external monitor or 2 anyway. Just know that these don’t come with a keyboard – and you’ll likely need to get the Microsoft Surface Dock to give you more ports.

ASUS ROG

‘ROG’ stands for Republic of Gamers and is the gaming line of products from Asus. This means these computers are great for nearly any performance intensive task.

Into gaming? Check out the best gaming microphones.

These laptops come with a ton of ports so you won’t need to spend extra on accessories just to plug your mixers or USB microphones into them.

I’m recommending the 15″ model as that gives you a nice balance of screen real estate and portability for a laptop, but they also have 17″ models as well if you want that extra screen real estate.

Asus ROG Strix Scar II GL504GW

The Asus ROG Strix Scar II GL504GW-DS74 is a brand new model available as of January 2019 and is the perfect laptop for your music recording and mixing needs.

It uses the NVIDIA RTX 2070 graphics card. Many software programs, including most DAWs, make use of the graphic card, which frees up the CPU to do its thing. Also, when you start plugging in 2 or 3 external monitors, you’ll definitely need the extra GPU power.

This version also includes improved cooling, which can keep your computer quieter. This is great as you don’t want to be picking up fan noise when recording.

The processor is an Intel Core i7-8750H, comes with 16GB DDR4 RAM, and an insane 512GB NVMe SSD, perfect for fast performance and storing large files.

Comes with 3x USB 3.0 ports, 1x USB Type-C port, 1x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI, 1x Mini DisplayPort.

Dell XPS 15

The Dell XPS line of laptops has been an excellent choice for a while now. It’s the thinnest 15″ PC laptop around but doesn’t sacrifice performance. The latest version – Dell XPS 9570 – includes Intel’s brand new Coffee Lake processor and a beautiful 4K touchscreen with Gorilla Glass for scratch resistance.

T61

I recommend the XPS9570 4K Touch model with the 8th generation Intel i7-8750H, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD. You’ll also get Nvidia GTX 1050Ti graphics card. You’ll be able to record and edit music, do video editing, and nearly anything else with this.

It comes with an SD card reader and 2 USB 3.0 ports.

Dell XPS 13

Dell recently upgraded the 13″ model for 2018 to include Intel’s 8th generation i7-8550U processor, among many other improvements that make for an excellent upgrade over the previous models.

I recommend the Dell XPS 9370 with a 4K touchscreen, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Fingerprint reader, and more. It has 3x USB-C ports (no USB-A).

It’s still not the most powerful and the graphics card doesn’t really compare with the other laptops highlighted here, but Dell has really put together an impressive ultraportable laptop.

The webcam placement is a little weird at the bottom, so if you plan to use that often I would recommend grabbing the Logitech C920S to go with it.

They also introduced a great new Rose Gold on Alpine White color option.

HP Spectre X360

The HP Spectre X360 is beautiful, versatile and powerful. I recommend the 15″ model updated in mid-2018 with the 8th Generation Intel i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and a Radeon RX Vega graphics card.

This is a “2-in-1″ laptop, meaning that the 4K touchscreen folds backward, effectively making it a tablet. The 15” model is a little under 4.5 lbs, which is a bit heavy to hold one-handed in tablet mode, but great for sharing things or writing. There is also a media mode for watching videos and a tent mode for presentations.

HP was smart by including both a USB Type-A port (the stand rectangle) and 2x USB Type-C ports (the new oval), one of which includes Thunderbolt. They also include an SD Card reader and an HDMI port so you shouldn’t need a bunch of dongles to all your gear connected.

If you want something a little lighter and more portable, there is a new 4K 13″ model that weighs 2.78 lbs. It uses the Intel UHD 620 graphics card, which is actually a slight downgrade compared with the previous 13″ model that had Nvidia 940MX. You do lose the HDMI port with this size though, although an adapter will easily solve that.

The versatility and reasonable price point make both sizes of the Spectre X360 an excellent choice for a Windows-based music production laptop.

Samsung Notebook 9 Pro

Here’s another 2-in-1 laptop, this time by Samsung. The Pro model was just announced at Computex earlier this year. The 15″ Notebook 9 Pro has been updated with Intel’s latest Kaby Lake processors as well and offers decent specs for the price.

Samsung has taken cues from their smartphone line when it comes to design, with thin bezels and more curvature. It comes with an S-Pen (and a slot to hold it) that has 4,000 levels of pressure and the ability to add shading by tilting it.

Similar to the Spectre above, you get both USB 3.0 and USB Type-C, an HDMI port, and an SD Card reader. The 13″ model only comes with 8GB RAM, while the 15″ model gets 16GB. Graphics power is also a lot better in the 15″ model with the AMD Radeon 450 vs Intel HD Graphics 620 in the 13″ version. Because of that, I would stay away from the smaller one for serious music producers.

PCAudioLabs

PCAudioLabs specializes in computer equipment for audio production. Their ROK BOX MC Mobile Series line of pro audio laptops lets you custom build a laptop that will fit your production needs and budget.

Final Suggestions

There are many great choices for music production laptops. I would suggest getting the best computer you can for your budget, but try to stay away from “cheap” options – and definitely avoid Chromebooks. You will just run into limitations and issues that take the fun out of your hobby or profession!

Let me know in the comments if you have any questions or if I’m missing anything.

We’re going to take a look at the best desktop computers for music production and recording. We have a separate article specifically highlighting the best laptops for music production if you want something portable.

Did you know that processing audio is one of the most CPU-intensive tasks that people do on computers today?

When processing audio, most signal and effect chains have to happen sequentially. Basically what that means is that you want a processor (CPU) with fast single core performance. DAWs still take advance of multiple cores (i.e. Intel Quad Core) though. 8th generation Intel i7 processors are the best, but 7th gen versions aren’t far behind.

As for RAM, don’t go less than 8GB. I highly recommend getting configurations with at least 16GB though.

Best Mac Laptop For Producing Music

For the most part, these will be Windows-based PC’s, but there will be a couple great options from Apple.

Keep in mind that the better the specs you get now, the longer your computer will last. Think of getting a desktop or all-in-one computer as an investment.

Contents

  • All-In-One Desktop Computers
  • Tower PCs

All-In-One Desktop Computers

All-In-One computers look great and save space, but the downside is that they tend to use laptop-like components to save space and keep heat production down.

Apple iMac

If I was getting a new Apple computer for music production in 2018, I would get the 5K 27″ iMac.

Because they made the RAM easily upgradeable on the 5K model (it will take 2 minutes – it’s like plugging in a power cord), I would get the lower 8GB configuration and purchase this 16GB or 32GB RAM kit separately.

In fact, if you look at the “frequently bought together” section on Amazon, you will see that is exactly what a lot of people do – and that’s what I just did as well a few months ago too!

You get plenty of I/O with 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports (USB C), 4 USB 3.0 ports, SD Card Reader, Wi-FI, and a headphone jack.

The screen is amazing and buying a similar quality option separately would cost you around $1,000… just for the monitor. Highly recommended.

HP ENVY All-in-One Computer

These computers are killer deals and have the perfect specs for audio production.

27″ All-in-One

There is a 27″ model with an i7-7700T, 16GB DDR4 SDRAM, and 2 hard drives: 1TB 7200RPM HDD and 128GB SSD.

The touchscreen has an IPS display for great viewing angles. You get 4 USB 3.0 ports, HDMI in and out, Thunderbolt 3, Ethernet, Wi-FI, Bluetooth 4.2, an SD card reader, and a headphone jack. There is also a GeForce GTX 950M graphics card with 4GB VRAM.

You can also upgrade to a 256GB SSD version.

Best Laptop For Music Production

What is there not to like for around $1500?

34″ Curved

Want a bigger screen? This thing is awesome. I think the 34″ model with i7-7700T, AMD Radeon RX 460, 16GB DDR RAM, 256GB SSD, and 1TB HDD is plenty, but you can always get this version with 32GB RAM as well.

Note that this version doesn’t have a touchscreen, but it is extremely quiet (a huge plus for music production and recording) and will give you plenty of desktop space to work.

The ports on the 34″ model are the same as the 27″: There is HDMI in and out, 4 USB 3.0, 1 USB-C Thunderbolt 3, Gigabit Ethernet, 3-in-1 card reader, and headphone/mic combo jack.

Dell XPS AIO

The Dell XPS 7760 has a 27″ touchscreen 4K monitor, Intel i7-7700K CPU, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB SSD, and an AMD Radeon RX 570 w/ 8GB GDDR5 memory. These are desktop-class components, not mobile versions.

It has 4x USB 3.0 ports, 2x USB 3.1 Type-C, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, an HDMI port, and a card reader. You can see the impressive speaker lineup built-in, but you will likely have your own studio monitors, so not sure those add a lot of value.

Either way, this computer is well-equipped and looks gorgeous, but at a cost.

Tower PCs

There are tons of choices for “tower” PCs for your audio recording and editing studio. I’m just going to highlight a selection of well-known brands with specs that will perform well at a reasonable price. The benefit of tower computers is that you tend to get the best performance for the price.

These usually don’t come with a monitor so you will need to keep that in mind when choosing one.

Dell XPS 8920

Best Mac Laptop For Music Production

For around $1,300, the Dell XPS 8930 has everything you’ll need to run your favorite DAW at full speed:

  • Intel i7-8700 CPU (8th Gen)
  • 16GB DDR4 RAM
  • NVIDIA GTX 1050Ti
  • 256GB SSD + 2TB HDD

For connectivity, you get 7 USB 3.0 ports, USB 3.1 port, 2 USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, DVD Burner, and a card reader. Plenty for your USB Interface (and anything else).

This tower is is what I’d call a “sleeper” – it looks plain from the outside, but it has some impressive hardware on the inside!

Don’t forget to grab a monitor too.

HP Envy 750

Priced a little higher, but with awesome specs, the HP Envy 750 comes with an i7-7700 3.4GHz CPU, NVidia GeForce GTX 1060 (3GB GDDR5 VRAM), 16GB DDR4 RAM, and a 1 TB 7200 RPM HDD + 256GB SSD. This is a killer setup – and is excellent for audio editing.

I/O includes 4x USB 3.0, 1x USB 3.1 Type-C, DVI, HDMI, 3x DisplayPort, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, 7-in-1 Card Reader, and DVD Burner. Comes with Windows 10 Home. This should be plenty to hook up a mixer and anything else you might need.

SkyTech Omega

We’re going to go up a level here with a recommendation from SkyTech Omega. What I love about this configuration is that it is liquid cooled, which keeps fans from running full speed and interrupting your recordings.

Specs include Intel i7-8700K 6-Core processor, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 250GB SSD, 2TB HDD, and the NVidia GTX 1080 GPU with 8GB RAM!

Just perfect if you ask me. The 2 hard drive combo is the ideal for quick tasks and lots of storage for plugins, samples, and tracks. If you’re into gaming (since that’s the main target audience for this PC) as well, take a look at these gaming microphones too.

You’ll get 4x USB 3.0 ports, 2x USB 2.0, Ethernet, and WiFi.

Apple iMac Pro

The iMac Pro isn’t cheap, but when you consider you get a top of the line 5K monitor included with the package, it doesn’t seem so bad.

Base model specs include: 3.2GHz 8-core Intel Xeon W processor, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, and a Radeon Pro Vega 56 GPU.

A friend of mine got one right after they came out and loves it. Just make sure you get all the Space Gray accessories when you first purchase it – Apple doesn’t sell them separately.

Build Your Own

March 2018 Update: Changed CPU & Motherboard to 8th Gen Intel (fastest single-thread performance today)

For those that would like to build a custom computer, I thought I would throw in a recommendation on what I would get as of March 2018. I’ve built 5 or 6 computers for friends and myself over the years, and find it kind of fun to put together.

Like I mentioned up top, you will want to skew your budget toward CPU power (if you have to) when custom-building a computer for music production.

Dell

  • CPU + Liquid Cooler: Intel i7-8700K (8th Gen) & Corsair Hydro H100i v2 (non “K” model is $50 cheaper)
  • Motherboard (LGA 1151 for 8th Gen): Asus ROG Strix Z370-E
  • GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 3GB
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4 2400MHz (Black)
  • SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB or Samsung 960 EVO 250GB PCIe NVMe SSD
  • HDD: Seagate 2TB BarraCuda 7200 rpm
  • PSU (Power Supply): EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G1
  • Case: Corsair Carbide Series 330R Blackout Edition Ultra-Silent
  • Monitor: 27″ ASUS VE278H

You can easily get away with a less powerful graphics card (GPU) here to save a little – and you can always add more hard drives over time as you need them. The motherboard comes with Wi-Fi so you should be covered there as well.

Best free office software

While Microsoft Office continues to dominate the world of office productivity suites, some users and businesses may be put off by the idea of monthly fees.

Additionally, over the years a number of other companies have launched their own versions of office software, covering documents, spreadsheets, and email, to rival Microsoft's flagship service.

Some of these alternatives come at a more competitive price - but even better, some are free to use. This will almost certainly be of interest to those consumers and businesses looking to minimize costs while retaining the ability to work with office files.

However, not all office suites are created the same, and come with limitations, especially in free versions that come with a paid-for upgrade to unlock features.

Additionally, you also need to bear in mind that formatting can be saved in different ways for the same file type for different programs, which can cause problems when sharing files with users who use different software. Therefore it's important to note if the formatting will be retained accurately.

On top of that, you also need to ask which office software types you actually need. Most packages offer documents and spreadsheets as standard, but some providers may not provide database or presentation software in a bundle, so it's important to check what you need against what providers will actually supply.

Regardless of all that, here we'll list the best in free office software as alternatives to Microsoft Office, for both home and business users.

1. LibreOffice

Everything you could want from an office suite, fully compatible with Microsoft formats and totally free to use – even commercially

Huge software suite
Completely free

LibreOffice is so good, you'll wonder why you ever paid for office software. It's compatible with all Microsoft document formats, and has almost every feature you'll find in the latest versions of Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

The suite contains six programs to cover every common office task: Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Math and Base. The last three are tools you won't find in many other free office suites, and are designed for vector diagrams, mathematical functions and databases, respectively. The latter is particularly useful; free alternatives to Microsoft Access are hard to find.

LibreOffice is an open source project maintained by a huge and enthusiastic community of volunteers constantly working to improve stability and add new features. There's a great selection of extensions and templates to make it even more flexible, and it's free for businesses as well as home users.

LibreOffice is a fork of Apache OpenOffice, and the two are extremely similar, but we’d opt for LibreOffice thanks to its more frequent update schedule and more modern interface. The latest release (version 6) adds a huge array of new features and fixes, including more interface customization options, improved file import and export compatibility, and new online help pages.

LibreOffice is available for Windows, Mac and Linux, but there are no official mobile versions available except for a document viewer for Android. It has some editing features, but they're experimental and we wouldn't advise relying on them.

2. Google Docs, Sheets and Slides

Best Free Office Software For Mac

For working across platforms and sharing documents, Google's excellent collection of online office apps is hard to beat

Cross-platform
Mobile apps available

If you work collaboratively, or switch between a PC and a Mac, Google Docs, Sheets and Slides should be your first port of call.

For anyone who's already deep into the Android/Google ecosystem, this suite will be a natural choice. The three key tools run happily in any web browser, and are available as mobile apps for Apple and Android devices.

Google's free office suite doesn't offer the advanced tools you'll find in desktop software like LibreOffice (there are no pivot tables, for example, and there's no database tool) but everything is laid out in a clear, logical way and all your files will be saved and synced automatically so you don't have to worry about transfers and backups.

The chief disadvantage of Docs, Sheets and Slides is that opening files created using other office software is a cumbersome process and files aren't always converted perfectly.

This is partly because Google's office tools use web fonts rather than ones stored locally on your device, and partly because Microsoft documents sometimes contain features not supported by Google. If that's a dealbreaker for you, read on...

3. Microsoft Office Online

Microsoft is taking the fight to Google with slimmed-down versions of all its usual applications, available to use free online

Works with OneDrive

Microsoft's desktop software carries a subscription fee, but the company has noticed the threat posed by G Suite and created its own set of free online apps.

Microsoft Office Online looks and works just like its desktop equivalent, and although advanced tools like pivot tables are out of reach, but aren’t offered by Google either.

If you generally use Microsoft document formats, Office Online is a brilliant choice. Unlike Google's free office suite, it doesn't need to convert your files before you can work on them, and you can share them easily through your Microsoft OneDrive account. Just log in using your Microsoft account (the same one you use to log into Windows 10) and you're ready to go.

There's a version of Office Online for Chrome, plus mobile editions of Office for iOS and Android.

4. WPS Office Free

A feature-packed free office suite for Windows, Linux and Android

Supports Microsoft file formats
Contains some ads

WPS Office Free is a slimmed down version of a premium office suite, but you'd hardly know it. Each of its three programs looks just as slick as the latest versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and is packed with just as many features.

File format support is excellent, and you can save your work in native Microsoft formats for easy sharing with Office users. There's no database software, but WPS Office comes with an excellent free PDF reader that's a great replacement for Windows' built-in app.

There's the occasional ad, but these are few and far between. They certainly won't get in the way of your work, and you'll easily forget that everything in this suite is completely free.

There are versions of WPS Office Free for Windows and Linux systems, as well as apps for Android devices, but Apple device users will need to look elsewhere.

5. Polaris Office

A cross-platform office suite that keeps your work in the cloud

Includes 1GB cloud storage

If you own a Samsung phone, you might already be familiar with the mobile version of Polaris Office. This cross-platform free office software is available for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, and comes pre-installed on some Samsung handsets. It’s compatible with all Microsoft document formats, and offers a slick ribbon-based interface with some basic customization options.

Take care if you choose to install Windows version, you’ll see various additional pieces of bundled software, which could potentially include a browser extension from McAfee called WebAdvisor, a market research tool called PremierOpinion, and an antivirus suite. You can decline all of these – just keep an eye out.

You’ll then need to sign in with Facebook or Google, or create an account. This is necessary because Polaris Office is a cloud-based service. Your free Polaris account comes with 60MB monthly data transfer, 1GB cloud storage, and can be used across three devices (one desktop and two mobile). If that’s not enough space, you can connect Polaris Office to Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, Microsoft OneDrive and Amazon Cloud Drive – or save work locally to your device.

Upgrading to a premium Polaris account gives you access to extra features including a PDF editor, removes ads, and the ability to search within a document.

6. SoftMaker FreeOffice

A free version of a premium suite, with most pro features intact

Supports Microsoft formats
No thesaurus

Like WPS Office Free, SoftMaker FreeOffice provides analogs for Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint (TextMaker, PlanMaker and Presentations respectively).

As with all the free office suites in this roundup, there's support for Microsoft file formats from 1997 onwards. It also offers effortless conversion to both PDF and Epub formats, which is a welcome addition.

Unfortunately, some key features are exclusive to the premium version of the software. Some of these (like tabbed browsing) are nice to have but non-essential, but the lack of a thesaurus is a real drawback for anyone who writes on a regular basis.

FreeOffice doesn't look quite as smart as WPS Office, but if you dislike the Microsoft ribbon and find it unintuitive then you'll prefer the slightly more old fashioned approach to navigation.

7. Open365

Complete open source solution

Open365 is more than just an office suite – it's a full cloud desktop that drags in a selection of great open source (usually desktop-based) software and puts it right in your browser. It includes the key components of the LibreOffice suite (Writer, Calc and Impress) along with Photoshop-esque image editor GIMP, Linux email package Kontact, and cloud storage by Seafile. Everything the desktop versions of those packages do can be done here, and every format they support is supported.

There's a desktop client to handle file transfers and mirroring your cloud storage to your hard drive, although you'll still need to run the software itself in-browser. Being full-on desktop software it's reasonably heavy both in terms of load times and the stress it puts on your system.

But get your whole team on board and its collaborative tools could make this an essential component of your workflow, particularly if you're hotdesking or using a variety of hardware.

8. Zoho Workplace

A genuinely exciting alternative to Google Docs

Can be daunting at time

While Google Docs is, thanks to the strength of its brand, probably more widely used, Zoho's online office solution is very good in its own right. It's certainly closer to a desktop office package, and it's strong enough to have attracted businesses like the BBC and Nike as regular users.

Zoho's new-look word processor (which ditches the classic Word-style interface in favour of a formatting sidebar) is very well-presented and capable of producing professional-looking docs, and it has a sterling spreadsheet and reasonable presentation package alongside it.

They're just the tip of the iceberg, however – Zoho Workplace includes a powerful site creation tool, a file management solution and many collaborative tools. Some are on the simplistic side, so they'll likely not replace anything you might already have in place, but if you're starting out as a small business Zoho is probably a good jumping-off point.

The Arlo Go is the most mobile unit on this list, making it ideal for those who campers, motorhome or boat owners, or even those with an outbuilding away from internet coverage. This is thanks to its onboard SIM for 4G LTE connectivity wherever there's signal. That cost includes seven days of free cloud storage but this will still cost you on data used, so factor that into the cost. You will also need to pay for a subscription service to get full use of activity zones and cut down on alerts and things like battery wastage.

The 720p resolution is not the best tobe honest but it's still enough to do the job, both for day and night. While you can record to SD, without an LTE connection the camera won't work fully which isn't ideal as you're recording blind.

6. Foscam FN3108XE: Fully wired solution

Foscam FN3108XE-B4-1T

SPECIFICATIONS

Resolution: 720p | Camera lens: 75-degree | Night vision: Yes | Recording options: 1TB hard drive | Two-way talk: No | WiFi: No

Reasons to Buy
2 year warranty
Reasons to Avoid
Some distortion

The Foscam FN3108XE is a full wired outdoor security camera system, so this is something to consider. However, it comes with four cameras and a 1TB hard drive. In our tests, we found the 720p daytime video to be good, with decent levels of contrast at every distance we tested. At night, and while there was limited graininess in its recordings, there was noticeable blurring when capturing movement and a tendency to wash out details on objects close to the camera with its powerful infrared lights. For peace of mind, the Foscam FN3108XE comes with a two year warranty, while the system uses Ethernet cables to both power and get video from its cameras, which makes it easier to set up than most wired systems. However, the Foscam lacks any sort of audio recording capabilities.

How easy are outdoor security cameras to install?

How easy wired or wireless solutions are to install depends on whether you choose to go with a wired or wireless solution.

The latest wireless outdoor security cameras simply have to be positioned where you want them as they’re powered by rechargeable batteries, and provided you’re in range of your wireless route, it should be a pretty painless set-up. Battery life is also pretty good, lasting one to two months between charges, but the downside is that footage is only recorded as short clips when motion or sound is detected to avoid draining the battery.

Some WiFi cameras offer wireless connectivity, but will require a power supply, making setup a bit more of a chore as you’ll have to drill through walls, but able to record 24/7 if required.

Full wired solutions require you to run cables to send both a feed to what’s known as a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) or Network Video Recorder (NVR), as well as power each camera. Footage is recorded to an internal hard drive in the DVR or NVR, and depending on the size of the drive, you can record continuously should you wish to.

Because you’re having to install cables and drill through walls, setup can take time. If you’re not comfortable doing this, it’s best to get a wired solution professionally installed.

How is video stored and viewed?

Wired outdoor security cameras need you to connect the DVR or NVR to a TV or computer monitor, meaning you don’t need to be connected to the internet to view footage. Navigation of the interface is done via a USB mouse that comes bundled with the outdoor security camera kit.

Provided you can connect your DVR or NVR up to your internet connection (often requiring an Ethernet cable), more advanced wired systems allow you to view footage remotely on your smartphone or via the web thanks to supported apps.

Most wireless outdoor security cameras favor cloud storage to store video. Cloud storage sees any footage recorded automatically sent, stored and backed up at a secure remote location. This can then be accessed when need, with file encrypted for your security.

Outdoor Security Systems Reviews

Footage is viewed live on your smartphone via an app or on a web page. You’ll find that unless you simply want to watch live video or store a minimal amount of clips over a short period of time, a subscription fee will be required.

Motion detection and alerts

Best Outdoor Security System For Macbook Pro

Cameras are clever enough to not only detect motion, but also hear any loud sounds (with most allowing you to tweak the sensitivity), such as windows being smashed. Should a camera detect unusual motion or sound, it can automatically send an alert to your phone. Advanced outdoor cameras are also equipped with face and pet recognition, so it’ll know not to alert you when a family member comes home.

If you want a camera that can record audio in addition to video, you should not expect this feature to come built in for wired cameras. With most NVR-based systems, a microphone is a separate purchase that only works indoors. Most wireless system though feature two-way audio, allowing you to not only hear what’s going on, but to also speak with visitors or ward off burglars. As for the legality of recording audio, check your local or state laws.

What to look for when buying a wireless security camera

The best outdoor security cameras have a number of features to look out for. First up is the video quality captured, with most now recording in Full HD 1080p, though some still feature lower resolution 720p capture. You’ll also find that some of the latest outdoor security cameras record in 4K and in High Dynamic Range (HDR). These cameras deliver even better detail and clarity, but they do need a fast and stable internet connection to really make use of them, while footage also takes up more storage thanks to the bigger files.

As well as daytime recording quality you also need to think about how night-time footage is captured. Outdoor security cameras use infrared LEDs to record footage when light levels drop. Footage is captured in mono, while the range of what the camera sees is reduced compared to daytime recording, which can be anything from 15ft to 30ft and beyond.

The field of view is another key feature. Most outdoor security cameras have a narrower field of view than wireless indoor security cameras, with some offering just less the 55-degrees of coverage, while others can be much wider at over 100-degrees.

How many cameras do you need?

How many cameras you need really depends on the size of your property. Most outdoor security camera systems are sold as a kit, featuring two, three or four cameras (and in some cases eight). It's up to you to decide how many cameras you need for your home surveillance system, but make sure each entrance point is covered.

Depending on regulations where you live, you might need to get consent from people you're recording. This is usually as simple as using a sign that says there are security cameras present.

Sometimes you might need to buy additional cameras. For example, it's also possible to buy an NVR that supports up to four cameras but only comes with two. In these instances, you can usually order extra cameras from the manufacturer.

If you're adding wired cameras, it's important to make sure you also get the appropriate cables and to allot some time for installation. Also remember that your video storage might get used up faster, or, in the case of cloud storage, you might have to pay a subscription fee if you’re using more storage.

Smart home integration

Many of the latest wireless outdoor security cameras can be integrated with other smart home systems and gadgets. Some feature support for Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice commands, allowing you to view video from the camera on an Amazon Echo Show or Google Assistant Smart Display, while it’s also possible to control smart locks, thermostats and other devices in your smart home. If you want to do this, check if any home automation or DIY home security systems work with the camera you’re thinking about buying.

Great Interface but some features should be part of the free version

I love how this app uses markdown for composing the message. However, I feel some features that are behind the paywall are unsatisfyng. The one that annoys me the most is the text size. I have to pay to change the size of the text? Really?!

I like this app

It is simple, has a simple layout and is great for capturing things on the fly. At first I didn't realize how easy it was to embed pictures and attachements. The synching works perfectly. I like Apps that are not over developed with features not needed....good job guys....

Premium is a scam!

I paid for the subscription (though why a memo app decided on a subscription system is BEYOND me) and it was a total waste. The premium purchase does not initiate in the app so it never actually worked. No app support or way to find a refund available.
App Store should not allow this app to continue scamming people like this.

What do you need to know about free software?

We make a lot of player recommendations here at Make Use Of, where everyone is an addict, and we’ve even given you advice on how to record streaming radio as mp33 Easy Tools to Record Streaming Music as MP3 Files3 Easy Tools to Record Streaming Music as MP3 FilesRead More.

With the list of free players growing all the time (iffy companies are cropping up all over the web like raging teen acne – awful to behold and tough to stamp out) it’s time to narrow your choice down to the best available players.

I’ve listed 3 really good free online radio players for your desktop (Windows, Mac and Linux).

For PC

This free radio phenomenon is described in detail here.Record Streaming Audio with Screamer RadioRecord Streaming Audio with Screamer RadioRead More Screamer is simple to use and can handle just about any streaming format.

  • Shoutcast and Icecast MP3 Streaming
  • Icecast OGG Vorbis Streaming
  • WMA Streaming
  • AAC Streaming

Best of all, it’s ad free and virtually indetectable (sound aside, of course). Your computer won’t even feel it, and the player window itself is teeny tiny.

By searching the Screamer radio directory, you can build a presets list – this is the collection of stations the app has collected for you. You can search by genre, language, network or region. The selection of genres is very broad and gets quite exotic, from Anime Music to something called ‘Reggaeton’. There’s also a section called ‘Salsa, Bachata, Merengue’ and a category of Nerd Music. Nerd Music!

The sheer extent of the radio database is the best thing about Screamer. But if that doesn’t impress you, maybe you’ll be moved by its handy< a href=”//www.makeuseof.com/tag/record-streaming-audio-with-screamer-radio/”>extra functions. Screamer doubles as a recorder and encoder!

Features include:

  • Recording buffer: start recording in the middle and still save the entire song!
  • Direct MP3 Audio stream saving, no loss of quality.
  • Direct OGG Vorbis stream saving, no loss of quality.
  • Or encode OGG Vorbis as MP3 using Lame
  • Encode WMA or AAC to MP3 using Lame

Lame has an awful name. It’s anything but! This is considered one of the best mp3 encoders at mid to high bitrates.

To select the destination folder for your recorded tracks, go to the Screamer Preferences window and select the Recording tab. You can also define file name patterns and buffer sizes here.

In the General Preferences window, you can set Display and Startup options. For example, hide Screamer Startup if it annoys you and make this little player as inconspicuous as possible.

For Windows or Mac

Musicovery. This one is highly interactive and customisable – very easy to use. It was good enough for our editor Aibek, who mentioned it as one of his favorite online music services! My Favorite Online Music ServicesMy Favorite Online Music ServicesRead More Commentators gush that Musicovery is great for discovering new music because of the plethora of ways you can define your tastes, do searches and get recommendations.

Most famously… it’s mood-searchable!

What you do is define the mood you want on the north-south-east-west compass, which reminds me those political compasses where you answer some questions about your social attitudes and get placed on a spectrum: welfare state proponent vs. free market capitalist (up and down scale) AND socially liberal vs. socially conservative (left and right scale).

MusicoveryMusicovery: Interactive webRadioMusicovery: Interactive webRadioRead More does the same with mood by getting you to place yourself between Dark and Positive, and Energetic and Calm.

Once you’ve clicked somewhere on this 2D chart, you must limit yourself to an era and a genre.

For Linux

Originally inspired by Apple’s iTunes, Rhythmbox is based on the powerful GStreamer open source framework. Linux users will get:

1. An easy to use browser

The Rhythmbox tab list (on the far left) allows you to view your Play Queue, Library, Podcasts, Radio preferences and Last.fm streams. So, you get a lot more than radio streaming. And people whinge about the poor player options on Linux!

2. Comprehensive audio format support through GStreamer

GStreamer is a multimedia framework written in C which allows the programmer to create media-handling components like audio and video playback , recording, streaming and editing. 4. Sandra-

In this sense of the word, I suppose Pandora Internet Radio isn't a consideration but while I was operating a Windows machine I was completely happy with Pandora.

I no longer use Windows more than maybe 1% of the time I spend on a computer and Pandora seems to have issues with Adobe flash under Ubuntu. That's the story according to Pandora's people, anyway.

I've tried a few of the options listed in your article and some of those in the comments. I still would choose Pandora's programmability if it worked for me in Linux without requiring wine. As it stands, I'm using what's available from Shoutcast via Amorok. I'll give it credit for a multitude of choices.

  5. For Jamendo is Pyjama under the Ubuntu.

  6. Songbird rules. I use it on Ubuntu.
By far the best Music Player I have used.

  7. This is a very nice article. As of right now, I am fully enjoying screamer radio thanks to you. I might have to try musicovery sometime.

  8. Nice article. I hope, since your reading up on the issue, that a best music streams post is on the way.

Rhythmbox is by far the best music player for gnome in my opinion.

Last.fm is getting really good and with their radio something I'm considering paying for.
